Kathmandu, April 9

Teachers and staff protesting in Kathmandu demanding the enactment of the Education Act symbolically raised their hands in protest against the government on Wednesday.

Gathered at the Baneshwor–Babarmahal road section, the teachers and staff raised their hands in unison as a form of demonstration. They raised their hands to pressure the government to promptly enact the Education Act and create an environment for dialogue.

“We raised our hands in protest to demand the enactment of the Education Act and to create a environment for dialogue,” said Purna Blon, a teacher from Hetauda participating in the protest. “It has already been a week, but our demands have not been addressed. That is why we tried to exert pressure today by raising our hands.”

A large number of police personnel were deployed for security. Due to the protest, traffic along the Baneshwor–Babarmahal section was affected.

Starting April 7, the teachers have also announced a nationwide academic strike. Concerns have been raised that their protest might delay the publication of results, as it has affected the checking of answer sheets for the ongoing SEE (Secondary Education Examination).

Previously, teachers had protested by wearing black armbands, blowing whistles, maintaining silence, switching on mobile flashlight and even sleeping on the streets.
