Kathmandu, April 6
ANNISU-R, the UCPN-Maoist-aligned student union, is gearing up for Free Student Union elections. As part of preparations for the polls, it has formed election committees for all seven provinces.
A meeting of office-bearers held under Ramesh Malla, ANNISU-R president, has formed a 5,101-member main committee under Malla. It also constituted seven sub-committees, including economic, data monitoring, manifesto drafting, promotion and volunteer mobilisation sub-committees, which will work under the main committee.
ANNISU-R has appointed Chiranjivi Lamichhane as FSU election committee coordinator for Province 1. Ram Babu Baitha and Dipak Devkota will look after FSU polls in Province Numbers 2 and 3, respectively.
Province Numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7 have Puran KC, Tilak Raj Bhandari, Pancha Singh and Ramesh Dhami as FSU election coordinators, Surdendra Basnet, ANNISU-R spokesperson, said.
The Maoist student union has started preparations for FSU elections, though the Tribhuvan University is yet to announce the dates for the polls. There are talks that the FSU polls will take place in the third week of Baishakh, 2073 (in about a month). As per rules, FSU elections should take place every two years. But the vote has not taken place even once in the last eight years.
“We are ready for the elections,” senior vice-president of the ANNISU-R, Madan Aryal, said. “We hope the poll date will be announced soon.”
