Banke district shut to protest arrest of Nepali Congress youth leader

Banke, January 9

Members of the Nepali Congress-aligned Tarun Dal have called for a general strike in Banke district in southern Nepal on Monday as well to protest the arrest of a local youth leader.

Divijay Jung Rana, chief of Tarun Dal’s Banke-1 was arrested on Saturday on charge of attacking the UML-aligned Yuva Sangh member Santosh Budhathoki. The NC youth wing had enforced a shutdown in the district on Sunday also.

Life has been crippled in the district due to the bandh. Kohalpur bazaar remains shut, and vehicles remain off the road. According to police, although Laxman Malla, a member of the Yuva Sangh carried out the attack, Rana was the the mastermind behind it. Malla was arrested in Kathmandu on Sunday.

According to reports, Budhathoki was attacked on December 29 night at an eatery in Kohalpur.
