Relatives vandalised Ishan Children and Women’s Hospital in Basundhara, Kathmandu, on Tuesday after a child died there in course of treatment.

The angry kin turned their anger on the hospital after Bir Krishna Maharjan (3), the only child of Shyam Krishna Maharjan of Dharmasthali, Tarakeshwor municipality, died while undergoing treatment.

The relatives blamed the hospital’s negligence for the child’s death and pelted it with stones, shattering its glass windows.

Guardians had brought the child suffering from fever and common cold to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj on Monday night. They had taken the child to Ishan at 1 am after TUTH doctors said beds were unavailable.

Shyam Krishna said they had admitted his child to Ishan in ‘normal condition’. The hospital admitted the child to its ICU the same night, only to inform the relatives at 6 am that he had died.

The child’s uncle Dil Bahadur Maharjan said: After admitting the child, the hospital did not even allow us a visit. He died because of doctors’ negligence.

The child’s uncle Dil Bahadur Maharjan said: After admitting the child, the hospital did not even allow us a visit. In the morning, all of a sudden, they informed us that he had died. This happened because of doctors’ negligence.

On its part, the hospital administration said the child was brought in a critical condition.

Bipin Jangam, the hospital’s administrator, said they could not save the child because pneumonia had infected his heart.

Hospital administrator Bipin Jangam said: The child should have been brought here on oxygen support. But they chose to bring him in a taxi. He showed signs of minor improvement, but this did not last and he died.

Jangam told Onlinekhabar: The child was serious. He should have been brought here on oxygen support. But they (guardians) chose to bring him in a taxi. In the morning, he showed signs of minor improvement, but this did not last and he died.

Police had rained lathis on those protesting against hospital’s alleged negligence and reportedly arrested some of the demonstrators.
