The United States government has nominated Dean Thompson as the next ambassador to Nepal.
The White House says on Tuesday that President Joe Biden has announced his intent to appoint Thompson as the next ambassador to Nepal. Following the appointment, he will replace incumbent Randy Berry, who is taking the charge of the US mission in Kathmandu since October 2018.
The White House says Thompson is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, in the class of minister-counsellor. He currently serves as the State Department’s principal deputy assistant secretary for South and Central Asian affairs and was the acting assistant secretary from 2020 to 2021.
Prior to that, Dean Thompson was the deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and the deputy chief of mission and charge d’affaires, a.i. of the US Embassy in Bucharest, Romania. Thompson also was the consul general of the US Consulate in Kolkata, India.
