Kathmandu, December 25

Police have taken 40 locals of Jorpati, including former joint secretary of Nepal government, Gita Prasad Khanal, under control for obstructing the expansion of the Jorpati-Sundarijal road. Arrested on Sunday morning, they are in the custody of Gaushala police office.

Khanal has also worked at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority. He was chief district officer of Dadeldhura, Syangja, Gulmi and Bajhang.

Locals have pointed that the road expansion work will lead to dismantling of parts of 871 houses.

The locals hit the streets under Khanal demanding compensation as per current market prices of land in the area.

It is learnt that the price of land in the area ranges from 15 lakh rupees to 40 lakh rupees per anna.

Khanal told Onlinekhabar:  We will not let them pull down our houses unless and until we get compensation as per current market prices of the land. He pointed that the Supreme Court has already issued a ruling against road expansion.  He lamented that police had arrested them even when they were putting forth their demands in a peaceful manner.
