From couch to climb: Discovering the joy of trekking

I have been more of a homebody for all my life. My idea of a holiday was to be at home or in a cafe reading a book. The thought of trekking through Nepal did cross my mind a few times yet I never packed my bags and left. It was a distant dream. But sometimes life has different plans for you.

I am grateful to my mother for introducing me to the joys of travel when I took my first flight overseas. While I thanked her for the opportunity, I realized that the adventure I sought was beyond the security and comfort of family trips. I enjoy them, but as a young adult, I wanted experiences that would challenge me to push my boundaries and discover new aspects of myself.

From first treks to life-changing adventures

That’s when I got a chance to explore Nepal. I had seen hills and mountains during my domestic flights but my flight to Biratnagar was when I saw the topography of my country. However, it took me years to get out of my house and explore more than just regular tourist hotspots.

My first trek, Khumai, was a steep learning curve. Although the trek was a daylong and barely a trek more like a hike, I was out of shape, ill-prepared, and nervous. I had never been on a proper hike or trek so the altitude was starting to affect me a little. I experienced a little headache as a sign of acute mountain sickness but that didn’t stop me from seeing what mountains looked like up close. And my amazing group of friends, they were a reminder of the power of companionship.

My second one, Mardi Himal Base Camp, was a trek I will never forget because of the heart-burning ascent and those stairs! I pressed on, determined to complete the trek. On the second day, my knees started giving out due to the lack of strength. As I climbed higher, I passed trekkers struggling more than I was. It motivated me and I started walking with one of the fittest members in the group. The journey from Pokhara to the viewpoint was a mixed experience for me. We saw Machhapuchhre for the first time on our 6-day trek. I was exhausted but so emotional about how everybody reached the top.

Takeaways from trekking

Trekking is not just about physical preparation, it is about cognitive strength. It requires a combination of courage and a positive mindset. There may be times when you doubt yourself, when every part of your body aches, and all you want to do is give and go home. However, it is important to remember that these challenges are temporary and the beautiful frames that change every minute during the trek will help you change your mind.

I also learned the importance of teamwork. Everything is a shared experience, from offering a helping hand, sharing snacks, laughing, and talking endlessly.

During the trek, your companions become your greatest source of motivation.

Well, finally I learned the value of preparation. While I may have underestimated the physical demands of trekking, I realized that proper packing can make a big difference. By preparing correctly, you can increase your chance of success and reduce the risk of injury.

Embracing the transformative power of trekking

Reflecting on my journey, I have achieved something. I had gone from being a couch potato to an occasional trekker.

Trekking in the terrains of Nepal has taught me the importance of stepping outside the house, embracing new experiences, and believing in my abilities.

My trekking experience has inspired me to explore even more destinations in the future. I plan to go on at least one trek each year, as much as possible. For anyone considering trekking, all I say is drink warm water and keep walking. My journey from Netflix to nirvana wasn’t easy, but it was undeniably worth it.
