Mugu, August 8

Heavy rains continuing in Nigale and Topla villages of Mugu district after a prolonged spell of drought have hit farmers hard.

With rains destroying their vegetables and other crops and landslides putting their farmlands at risk, villagers are a worried lot these days. Most of the villagers have stopped growing crops and switched to vegetable farming, lured by prospects of higher income. When the climate was favourable, these people used to supply vegetables to district headquarters Gamgadhi and earn a tidy sum.

Simha Rup Rokaya of Niigale: Monsoon disasters have put our houses in peril after destroying vegetables and crops. I don’t know where to shift now.

Simha Rup Rokaya of Niigale laments that monsoon disasters have put their houses in peril after destroying vegetables and crops. He says: I don’t know where to shift now.

No different is the plight of Rupa Rokaya. Growing vegetables, she used to earn up to Rs 25, 000 every month.

With all vegetables destroyed, now she does not know how to manage funds for running her household.

People of Mugu say they have not been able to sleep fearing that rainfall may cause collapse of their houses anytime.

Flooding and landslides have shut roads. Landslides have also swept away water pipelines in the district, causing gret difficulties to people. Local people say they have not been able to sleep fearing that rainfall may cause collapse of their houses anytime.
