Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, arrested on charges of spreading rumours against Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, has been presented in court by the police.
According to Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) spokesperson Hobindra Bogati, Prasai was brought to court via the Office of the Attorney General. “We will request the court to remand him in custody for further investigation,” Bogati said.
The CIB apprehended Prasai from his residence in Bhaktapur on Tuesday morning. He was later handed over to the Cyber Bureau for detailed investigation and legal proceedings.
Prasai was detained under the Electronic Transaction Act, 2008, for alleged violations. The Office of the Attorney General has also suggested investigating possible charges under the Penal Code, including defamation, fabrication of false evidence, and issuing threats to the President or Members of Parliament.
The controversy arose after Prasai claimed on Monday that Prime Minister Oli had invested $210 million in Cambodia’s Axiata Company. He supported his allegations by presenting certain documents, which have since been deemed fake, according to CIB Chief AIG Deepak Thapa.
Following the viral spread of Prasai’s statement on social media, the police initiated an investigation. During a search of his residence, authorities seized three laptops and nine mobile phones.
