Former King Gyanendra Shah calls Nepalis from Himal, Tarai, Hills to unite for the sake of Nepal

Kathmandu, January 10

Former King Gyanendra Shah has appealed to Nepalis from the Himalayan region, the Hills and the Tarai to unite for the sake of the country.

Issuing a press release on the occasion of Prithvi Jayanti, the day marking the birth of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified princely states and created a unified Nepal, the former king said it’s time to decide who should play what kind of role, in a changed context.

“I have left the Palace, in keeping with the glorious tradition of Shah kings’ of respecting the will of the people,” he said on Sunday. The ex-king stressed he has not left the Nepali household and quit his responsbility to Nepal and the Nepali people.

He said ongoing disputes vis-a-vis the political system, geography and administrative system will do us no good.

The former king noted that the public have been bearing the additional burdern resulting from the economic crisis, price rise, shortages and dependence.

At present, Nepali people are finding it hard to manage two square meals a day, he said, adding: “This is a serious issue.”   In an oblique reference to political actors, he said it’s time to come clean on what role people expect them to play.
