Kathmandu, November 4

Indian Army Chief Manoj Mukund Naravane has arrived in Kathmandu on a three-day official visit.

Sources in the Tribhuvan International Airport say two aircraft belonging to the Indian Air Force have landed in Kathmandu at around 11:30 am today.

Primarily, the purpose of the visit is to receive an honorary rank of the general of Nepal Army from President Bidya Devi Bhandari as the continuation of the decades-old tradition existing between the two armies. However, this visit has received additional attention both in Kathmandu and New Delhi as the two countries are engaged in a serious border dispute for the past one year.

Some have hoped that Naravane’s visit could resume political dialogues between the two countries, claiming he would also bring the Indian government’s message to Nepal.

After meeting Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and his counterpart Purna Chandra Thapa, Naravane will return to New Delhi on Friday.
