Kathmandu, April 28
The smart card project, meant to replace traditional citizenship papers and provide other detailed information to the government about Nepali nationals, has caught the attention of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee. The committee is summoning Prime Minister KP Oli, Home Minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet, Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel and chiefs of security agencies for discussion on the issue at Thursday’s meeting of the committee, after receiving complaints of irregularities in the project. Committee member Ramhari Khatiwada confirmed this.
We have received information that they (the high officials) are attending the committee meeting on Thursday, Surendra Aryal of the committee said. The committee meeting is taking place at 11.30 am.
A sub-committee under Khatiwada is probing the claims of irregularities.
