Kathmandu, July 30
Mahantha Thakur, who lost the ownership of the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal with an Election Commission decision earlier this week, has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court on Friday challenging the commission.
In the petition, Thakur says the commission’s decision to grant the legal recognition of the party to the faction led by Upendra Yadav and Baburam Bhattarai is erroneous as the commission did not acknowledge the recent changes made in the party’s executive committee.
Thakur has been claiming that he reorganised the committee on June 15, but the commission had made the decision based on the committee’s composition as of April 2020, when the party was formed.
The party came into existence with a dramatic merger between the then Rastriya Janata Party and Sanghiya Samajbadi Party split as a group supported former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s decision to dissolve the House of Representatives whereas the other was against it. Both factions, however, had supported new Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba when he got the vote of confidence in the House earlier this week.
