Koshi Assembly Secretary Gopal Parajuli gets 6-year jail term for corruption

Biratnagar, Februry 13

The Supreme Court has convicted Koshi Province Assembly Secretary Gopal Prasad Parajuli in a corruption case, sentencing him to six years in prison on Wednesday.

The court found Parajuli guilty of embezzling Rs 62.37 million and imposed a fine of Rs 122.74 million—twice the misappropriated amount.

Parajuli was convicted in a case related to the illegal operation of a sand mine on Pashupati-owned land. At the time of awarding the contract, he was serving as the local development officer at the Kathmandu District Development Committee.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Kumar Regmi and Abdul Aziz Musalman.

Parajuli, who previously held key administrative positions, including Chief District Officer and Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law in Koshi Province, resigned to become the Province Assembly Secretary on April 25, 2019. He was reappointed for a second term, set to begin on April 21, 2025.

Following the court ruling, Parajuli has been automatically removed from his position.

The Supreme Court also convicted UML leader Nirmal Kuinkel and seven others in the same corruption case.
