With the full text of the Supreme Court order cancelling the Nijgadh airport project coming out, the government has said it will restart the plan and construct the airport there itself. However, experts and activists claim the court has not left any option to construct the airport there.
Speaking in an interaction in Kathmandu on Sunday, they said the court verdict clearly indicated that the government should explore other options to construct the next international airport.
Senior advocate Prakash Mani Sharma, who had filed the writ petition against the Nijgadh airport project, says the court verdict had clarified an airport could not be constructed in Nijgadh. “Further, constructing an airport there is similar to digging our own graveyard,” Sharma says highlighting the environmental impact of the proposed project.
Since all decisions related to the project have been cancelled by the court order, the government should now understand that it has to start the new process at a new place, according to advocate Raju Prasad Chapagain.
