Opposition parties obstructed the parliamentary session on Wednesday in protest against the government’s decision to dismiss Kulman Ghising, the Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
As soon as the House of Representatives session began, lawmakers from all opposition parties stood up in protest, prompting Speaker Devraj Ghimire to allow Maoist lawmaker Shakti Bahadur Basnet to speak.
Basnet accused the government of attempting to weaken the NEA and claimed that Ghising was removed to serve vested interests. He argued that instead of setting an example by retaining a competent administrator, the government had sent the wrong message.
Basnet also criticised Energy Minister Dipak Khadka for suggesting that the credit for ending load-shedding in Nepal should go to the Indian government.
