Kathmandu, March 15

The Ministry of Energy has prepared a proposal to seek Chinese assistance for the construction of a modern transmission line along Ring Road in the Kathmandu Valley.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is likely to put the proposal worth Rs 6 billion before Chinese authorities during his upcoming visit to China.

In its proposal, the ministry has stated that the monopole transmission line with the capacity of 132 KVA will make the power distribution system more systematic.

The distribution system in the valley has been quite inefficient, with installation of electric poles in a haphazard manner.

Sanjaya Sharma, spokesperson for the ministry, told Onlinekhabar: A modern transmission line is a must to manage all this mess. In the proposed transmission line, there will be three substations and three transformers.

According to initial estimates, the project will cost around $58 million (around 5.8 billion rupees).

The onus is on the Finance Ministry to decide whether to take concessional loan for the project from China or try getting grants for the same, Sharma said. Currently, Nepal Electricity Authority is launching a power transmission line improvement project in the valley with assistance from the World Bank.
