Show-cause notice in response to petition filed against speaker, deputy speaker

Parliament Building

Kathmandu, September 25

The Supreme Court has issued a show-cause notice in the name of the Federal Parliament Secretariat, asking for reasons why Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota and Deputy Speaker Pushpa Bhusal did not leave office even though the term of the House of Representatives expired.

A single bench of Justice Hari Phuyal issued the order in response to a writ petition demanding the positions of the House of Representatives speaker and deputy speaker are declared void now.

Petitioners Kishor Paudel and Anupam Bhattarai state that Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota and Deputy Speaker Pushpa Bhusal have not resigned yet despite the House term already being over, adding it could give them an opportunity to misuse state properties.

They had also demanded that the court issue an interim order barring the speaker and deputy speaker from accessing the benefits they have been receiving from the positions. The court, however, issued the show-cause notice only.
