Kathmandu, December 5
Student activists from the main opposition CPN-UML staged a protest close to the Embassy of India in Lainchaur, Kathmandu, on Monday, pointing that India had intervened in its bid to make the Parliament pass the Constitution Amendment Bill.
They described the Prachanda-led government as the puppet of India and demanded Prime Minister Prachanda to quit.
The protest came a day after India described the government-sponsored Bill, designed to split Hill districts from Province 5 and include them in Province 4, as an important step in incorporating aspirations of the Nepali society.
Addressing a corner meeting after the protest rally, student leaders pointed that India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Ranjit Rae, was conspiring to make sure that the House approves the Bill. They demanded that the government expel Rae, pointing at his efforts to make the House enact the Bill.
Police had stopped the protesters sporting the national flag at Lainchaur Chok. Government has declared the embassy and the vicinity a prohibited zone and mobilised a large number of police personnel.
The main opposition UML has been organising a series of protests in the Parliament and on the streets against the government-sponsored Charter amendment bid.
