Kathmandu, April 8
Friday’s meeting of the Constitutional Council, supposed to recommend senior justice Sushila Karki as the Chief Justice, ended on an inconclusive note. The next CC meeting will convene on Sunday. The incumbent CJ, Kalyan Shrestha, is retiring in four days. On grounds of seniority, Karki is to become the CJ. If she gets the post, she will make history by becoming the first woman CJ of Nepal.
Earlier, the CC meeting had failed to convene in the absence of parliamentary party leader from the main opposition. The CC meeting took place on Friday after the election of Sher Bahadur Deuba, Nepali Congress president, as leader of the NC’s parliamentary party. CC members said they will recommend names for the position of CJ and other vital positions at the next meeting.
