Kathmandu, December 12
Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba says his party wants to conduct local elections at the earliest, even if it means putting restructuring of civic bodies on hold.
Deuba, who was speaking at a programme in the capital, said even the main opposition party, UML, agrees that the elections should be held at the earliest. “We need to conduct elections, even if we have to retain the present day VDCs and municipalities,” he said.
Deuba’s statement comes a day after he met UML leader KP Oli to discuss a way out of the political crisis that started following the government’s decision to register a controversial bill in Parliament to amend the constitution to address the demands of the Madheshi Morcha.
“Even he (Oli) is ready. There could be national consensus on this. We need to conduct election under the system that we have now,” he said.
Deuba said he told Oli not to question the patriotism of the Madheshi people. The UML needs to support the government’s bill to amend the constitution, he added.
