Court grants 10-day custody extension for Rabi Lamichhane

Kathmandu, November 5

The court has granted an additional 10-day remand for further investigation into Rabi Lamichhane, chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and former Home Minister, who was detained in connection with a cooperative fraud case.

The previous remand, granted on October 31, expired on November 5. Suraj Adhikari, a court official, stated that the new custody period began on November 5. The bench of Judge Chandrakanta Paudel approved the extension, though police had requested 25 days for the investigation.

Lamichhane was arrested in Kathmandu on October 18 in connection with the Surya Darshan Cooperative fraud case in Pokhara. He was transferred to Pokhara the same night, and due to Saturday’s court closure, was presented before the court on October 20. At that time, a 7-day remand had been granted from the date of his arrest.

RSP supporters have continued to protest his detention, rallying outside the district court today. During the protest, some demonstrators attempted to breach a restricted area, prompting police to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.
