Kathmandu, January 12
Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has been placed in judicial custody. After the court proceedings on Sunday at the Kathmandu District Court concluded without a decision on his bail, Lamichhane was taken into custody at the Kathmandu police station.
Police officials have confirmed that he will be held at the Bhadra Kali police station until his next court appearance. He is scheduled to be presented in court again on Monday.
Lamichhane was recently released on bail in connection with a fraud case involving the Surya Darshan Cooperative in Kaski. However, a new case was filed against him concerning a similar fraud incident with Swarnalakshmi Cooperative in Kathmandu.
On Sunday, Lamichhane voluntarily appeared before the court to provide his statement regarding the latest charges. Advocate Yagya Mani Neupane, a former deputy chief of the RSP’s Disciplinary Commission, explained that since the court did not conclude the bail hearing, the judge ordered Lamichhane to be placed in police custody.
Neupane mentioned that there was a request for Lamichhane to be released under the supervision of his family or a government attorney, but the judge decided to remand him to police custody, citing the lack of precedent for such a release.
The bail hearing is scheduled to resume on Monday at 11 am.
