Kathmandu, November 2
Minister for Foreign Affairs Prakash Sharan Mahat says his government believes that the three-day state visit by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee will create a new basis for Nepal-India relations.
Mukherjee, the first Indian Head of State to visit Nepal in 18 years, arrives in Kathmandu later today.
In an interview with RSS, Minister Mahat said this shall be a goodwill visit. “This visit will help build a new basis for relations between the two countries. One cannot say that a single visit will contribute to fulfilling all objectives. We (Nepal and India) have reached this juncture after passing through different phases.”
“I am confident, this visit will help move our relations to forward and let go of the bitterness of the past,” he added.
He stated that since this is a visit by a ceremonial Head of State, the governments will not issue a joint statement, neither will Mukherjee sign any formal agreement.
“This visit will also set the tone for President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s visit to India,”said Mahat.
