More than 4,000 criminal cases filed in a month

A total of 4,468 criminal offenses were officially reported to the police across the country during the month of Falgun in the lunar calendar. Among the registered cases from mid-February to mid-March, banking offenses accounted for the highest share at 25.22 percent.

The Kathmandu Valley witnessed a significant rise in criminal offenses, including banking crimes, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police Dinesh Kumar Acharya, the central spokesperson of Nepal Police. Most banking offenses were related to cheque bounce cases.

Additionally, crimes stemming from the misuse of social media have also been on the rise.

During the month, 1,127 banking offenses were reported. Similarly, 521 cases involved crimes against public interest, health, safety, and morality. There were 501 suicide-related offenses, 419 drug-related crimes, 286 cases of theft, 168 cases of rape, 162 cases of fraud, 154 cases of vehicular homicide, 71 cases of attempted murder, and 42 cases of murder.

According to DIG Acharya, 1,337 cases were registered in the Kathmandu Valley. The breakdown of cases by province is as follows: 711 in Madhes, 665 in Koshi, 612 in Lumbini, 376 in Bagmati, 323 in Gandaki, 279 in Sudurpaschim, and 161 in Karnali.
