The tenures of the Inquiry Commission on Disappearances and Truth and Reconciliation Commission are set to end in 11 days from now. But both the commissions still have much to do when it comes to dealing with cases related to the decade-long Maoist insurgency. Keeping this in view, the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction is preparing to extend their tenures.
Rajendra Prasad Bhattarai, spokesperson for the ministry, said the ministry is making internal problems to propose Prime Minister to extend the tenures of the commissions. He said: We are working as per the need of the hour.
TRC members have concluded that the commission must get a year’s extension. Not so long ago, commission members had a dispute over whether or not to extend the commission’s tenure. According to a TRC member, all TRC members are now in favour of extending its tenure. He said: We will send a proposal to the ministry seeking term extension in a few days.
The ICD, formed to probe the status of the victims of forced disappearances that occurred during the decade-long war, has already forwarded a proposal to the ministry seeking a year’s term extension. According to under-secretary Ram Hari Kafle, the proposal also includes an action plan on performing certain tasks within a year.
The proposal has made mention of the number of complaints it has received, the tasks it has performed so far and the remaining tasks.
