Nepali environmentalist Shilshila Acharya has been included in the BBC’s list of 100 influential women for 2024, released on Monday.

Acharya, who has been working for over a decade in the fields of climate change, waste management, and environmental justice, is recognised for her significant contributions.

Currently serving as the Director of Avni Center for Sustainability, she is actively promoting sustainable solutions. The BBC highlighted her efforts in reducing plastic use, improving waste management systems, and recycling electronic waste. Acharya has also played a key role in advocating for a plastic ban in the Kathmandu Valley and in linking environmental justice with entrepreneurship.

Her company is engaged in minimising environmental impacts at the local level, working in both rural and urban areas. Acharya focuses on incorporating rural experiences into policy and practices to address climate change inclusively.

Previously, Acharya was also listed among Nepal’s 50 influential women by Onlinekhabar on March 8, 2023.

This global recognition by the BBC further elevates Nepali women’s contributions to environmental advocacy on an international platform.
