Kathmandu, June 15
Non-Resident Nepalis’ Association has urged the KP Sharma Oli government to do the needful for the rescue of Nepali migrant workers stranded in Qatar. As part of its efforts to bring the workers home, a team under NRNA President Shesh Ghale called on Labour Minister Dipak Bohora on Wednesday and asked the latter to facilitate the workers’ return.
On his part, Minister Bohora directed Labour and Employment Secretary, director-general at the Department of Foreign Employment and chief of the Kathmandu Labour Office to do whatever it takes for immediate return of stranded workers.
On the occasion, Badri KC, NRNA general secretary, informed that NRNA’s national coordination council in Qatar has been distributing relief to stranded workers in coordination with the Nepali Embassy. He said 17 of the 185 stranded workers have managed to return home.
Even if the victims want to return, they cannot do so without permission from the government of Qatar, KC informed, pointing that Nepal government’s initiatives are a must to secure their return.
KC also asked the government to take initiatives to secure compensation and air tickets for the workers from the host country. Minister Bohora said he is coordinating with the labour attache on this issue. He asked NRNA Qatar officials to work in close coordination with the attache and provide the workers’ details as early as possible.
On the basis of the details, workers will be categorised, Minister Bohora said. He said this will enable those concerned to make arrangements for the workers’ return. Minister Bohora said initiatives for compensation will be taken after that.
He asked NRNA general secretary to act as the facilitator in the whole process.
