Pyuthan erupted in protest on Monday against the government-sponsored plot that seeks to split Province 5. In several parts of the country, a movement against the plot has been continuing for two weeks.
Demanding an undivided Province 5, people staged demonstrations in Pyuthan on Monday. From 1 pm till 3 pm, they shut marketplaces to express their displeasure over the government-sponsored Constitution Amendment Bill, which basically aims to remove Hill districts from Province 5 and make them a part of Province 4.
Leaders from different political parties, business leaders and representatives of different NGOs addressed a corner meeting at Pyuthan. They demanded withdrawal of the Bill from the Parliament, pointing that it will ruin the country otherwise.
Joint coordinator of the ruling CPN-Maoist Centre (Pyuthan), Krishna Adhikari ‘Prakash’, said they will intensify their movement against the Bill if the government does not withdraw it from the House.
Devendra Verma, Pyuthan district secretary of the ruling coalition partner, Nepali Congress, warned that the situation will go out of hand if the government neglects the voice of a peaceful movement against the Bill.
Chuman Singh Basnet, president of RPP (Pyuthan), suggested the government not to redraw provincial boundaries against the desire of the people.
