Sundevi lake’s beauty overshadowed by lack of publicity

Kanchanpur, January 31

Nestled in the Chure hill range, Sundevi Lake is a hidden gem surrounded by dense forests in Shuklaphanta Municipality-8. The lake’s name derives from its golden glow when sunlight reflects off its waters—’Sun’ meaning gold in Nepali.

The lake spans 400 meters in length and 200 meters in width, with its water shifting between blue and yellow hues due to the wind. Despite the dense forest, no leaves are seen floating on its surface. Unlike most lakes in the Chure region, Sundevi Lake is devoid of fish.

The area is rich in biodiversity, home to deer, wild boars, monkeys, hedgehogs, and various bird species, including peacocks, hornbills, and barn owls. Blooming wildflowers further enhance its scenic appeal.

A small temple dedicated to Goddess Sundevi stands near the lake, attracting devotees, especially during Navratri, Dashain, Tihar, and Maghe Sankranti. The temple features bells dating back to 1673, signifying its historical and religious importance. A local belief holds that childless couples are blessed with children upon praying and making offerings here.

Despite its beauty and spiritual significance, the lake remains largely undiscovered due to poor publicity and lack of road access. Visitors must trek five kilometers beyond Watawaran Madhyawarti Samudayik Ban after an eight-kilometer drive from the East-West Highway.

Local social worker Durga Dutta Bhatta emphasized the need for development, urging authorities to build roads and promote religious tourism to create employment opportunities.

Historically, the Stationpur area, seven kilometers south of the lake, served as a British railway station for timber transport during the East India Company’s rule. Kanchanpur was later returned to Nepal by the British in exchange for Junga Bahadur Rana’s support during the 1857 Lucknow Revolt.

The pristine lake, with its religious and historical significance, has the potential to become a major tourism destination if authorities invest in infrastructure and promotion.
