Tragic stampede at Kumbh Mela claims at least 10 lives

Kathmandu, January 29

A stampede during the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, has resulted in several casualties. Indian media reports indicate that at least 10 people have died in the incident that occurred last night. A doctor from Prayagraj City, speaking to news agency AFP on the condition of anonymity, stated that 15 people have lost their lives.

The Indian daily Dainik Bhaskar reported that 14 people died and over 50 were injured. Citing its correspondent, the newspaper mentioned that 14 bodies have been brought to Swaroop Rani Hospital for postmortem examinations.

While varying death tolls are being reported, official confirmation from government authorities is still awaited.

Following the incident, the holy Amrit Snan (sacred bath) has been temporarily suspended.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 12, has so far seen an estimated 150 million people take a dip in the Ganges. Today, on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya (Magh Krishna Aunsi), over 100 million devotees were expected to participate in the Ganga Kumbh Mela.

However, a sudden stampede broke out late Tuesday night at the Sangam area in Prayagraj, leading to chaos and fatalities as people were crushed in the crowd. After the incident, local authorities removed barricades and reopened the roads.

In the meantime, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to gather details about the incident.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged devotees to avoid heading to the Sangam area and instead take a dip in the Ganges wherever they are. He has also appealed to the public to follow administrative guidelines and avoid paying heed to rumours.
