Winter session of parliament likely to end in first week of April

Kathmandu, March 16

The government is preparing to conclude the winter session of Parliament in the firs week of April.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire is set to leave for Uzbekistan on April 4 to attend the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference. In light of this, the government is making arrangements to end the session before his departure.

The IPU conference is scheduled to take place from April 5 to April 9.

“The government is preparing to conclude the session on April 2,” a source told Onlinekhabar. The winter session had commenced on January 31.

Before the Speaker’s departure, five replacement bills are expected to be passed by both houses of the Federal Parliament and certified by the President. Certification is likely to be completed on March 31, allowing the session to conclude before Ghimire’s foreign visit, the source added.

Prior to convening the winter session, the government had issued six ordinances, out of which five (excluding the land-related ordinance) are being replaced through amendments. According to the Federal Parliament Secretariat, 12 bills are currently under consideration.

Following the conclusion of the winter session, the budget session will commence. A pre-budget discussion is held in Parliament one month before the budget is presented.

As per parliamentary regulations, a gap of at least 15 days is required between two sessions. This provision has led to the decision to conclude the winter session in the third week of Chaitra.
