Kathmandu, December 11
Agitated locals pelted stones at a police station in a suburb locality in Kathmandu following the ‘mysterious’ death of a taxi driver, on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, Rajkumar Lama, a resident of Bauddha, was found inebriated and unconscious on the road on Saturday night. He breathed his last while being rushed to Nepal Medical College in Attarkhel.
However, locals argue that Lama was beaten to death by police after he was found to be driving under influence. They demanded an investigation into the case and action be taken against policemen concerned.
While a group of locals threw stones at the police station in Bauddha, another set fire to three police motorcycles parked near the station. Police, meanwhile, fired tear gas canisters at the protesters, who shouted slogans against them.
Kathmandu SP Pradhumna Karki said at least eight protesters have been detained following the incident. He said,” A policeman has sustained injury to his eye. All window panes of the station have been smashed.”
