Kathmandu, January 4
Speaker Onsari Gharti called on Prime Minister Prachanda at his official residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday morning. At the meeting, Speaker asked PM to strive for an understanding on the Constitution Amendment Bill with political parties, including those in the opposition, within January 8, when the Parliament is likely to reopen.
Gharti met Prachanda a day after calling on top political leaders. A source at the Speaker’s Secretariat told Onlinekhabar: Speaker and UML Chair KP Oli met at New Baneshwor yesterday. At the House Business Committee meeting, she met Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel. Speaker called up NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and requested him to reach an all-party understanding by January 8.
PM Prachanda told Speaker Gharti he will make efforts to reach an understanding with parties from today itself
At Wednesday’s meeting, Speaker asked Prachanda, who is also chair of the CPN-Maoist Centre, to hold talks with parties in the capacity of PM and strive for consensus. In response, PM said he will make efforts to reach an understanding with parties from today itself.
At the same time, PM called Speaker’s initiatives to arrive at consensus through discussions with leaders of different political parties as positive. The Supreme Court ruling on the Bill has made way for resumption of the sovereign Parliament’s stalled meetings.
But the UML continued its protest in the Parliament, forcing Speaker to announce postponement of the meeting till January 8.
