The Nepali music scene kicked off the new year with a vibrant array of releases in January, showcasing the diversity and creativity of the country’s artists. From rap and pop to rock, eight standout tracks captured the attention of listeners, offering something for every musical taste. Notably, half of these songs are fresh renditions of earlier hits, reimagined with modern twists that breathe new life into beloved classics.
Whether it is the pulsating beats of rap, the soulful melodies of pop, or the raw energy of rock, these releases highlight the evolving soundscape of Nepali music.
Here is a closer look at the eight songs that made January a memorable month for music enthusiasts across the nation.
Feri Jaalma
Many of you might still remember the song Jaalma from the 2015 movie Resham Filili. The song was immensely popular at the time, and gatherings featuring dance performances were considered incomplete without it. Even today, Jaalma remains a favourite at events where people dance.
Now, after nearly a decade, the song has a new rendition titled Feri Jaalma, featured in the sequel Feri Resham Filili. This version is equally catchy and entertaining to listen to.
Hopefully, it will also win the hearts of thousands, just like the original did.
Ekantama Reprise
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, The Mantra has rereleased one of its most popular songs, Ekantama. Originally from the band’s debut album Mantra, released in 2003, the song holds a special place in their discography.
The music video for Ekantama, directed by Bibek Thapa, tells the story of a girl reminiscing about a past love, who is now committed to someone else in the present.
Kaha Pugey Ma
Kaha Pugey Ma by The Elements features a black-and-white music video. The video showcases all three band members playing music while simultaneously reflecting on their lives. The song’s lyrics convey the message that achieving a goal requires patience and hard work.
Chupchap
Sung by Shiva Pariyar and composed by Sanjeev Baraili, Chupchap is a beautiful song whose female version was released on August 9, 2024. The female rendition, performed by Mountain Sisters, has been well-received by audiences, surpassing 100,000 views on YouTube. Meanwhile, the male version’s music video is also gaining significant appreciation and has already crossed 300,000 views on the platform.
Directed by Bibek BK, the music video for Chupchap features singer Shiva Pariyar, guitarist Sanjeev Baraili, and percussionist Bhuwan Gandharva, all performing together.
Samjhera
After a year of releasing the music video for Khusi Deykhchu Timi Aja, The Edge Band dropped their new music video for Samjhera on January 28. Known for their heartfelt and sentimental songs, The Edge Band presents Samjhera, which tells the story of a couple struggling with drug addiction. Directed by Jholeyism, the music video aims to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and unsafe behaviour.
Suruwat
The music video of Yoda’s Suruwat takes us to beautiful landscapes of the Himalayas. He dropped the music after a hiatus of a year, since his last release Malai K Marchas.
In the song, Yodda talks about his dreams, abilities and disappointments.
Yodda says that Suruwat marks a new chapter in his musical journey, blending his signature sound with experimental vibes.
Budi 2
Budi 2 by 5:55 is a new rendition of their 2019 hit Budi, which has garnered over 52 million views on YouTube. Released on January 1, Budi 2 is also gaining significant popularity, with its music video already surpassing one million views.
Directed by Hitesh Thakuri Aum, the music video for Budi 2 tells the story of an elderly couple, where the wife urges her husband to quit smoking.
Layak
Rock band Chumbak has been active at recent times. They are frequently doing shows the dropping news songs back to back. Recently, they have dropped the lyrical video for the new song Layak. The song is sixth track from the band’s upcoming album Sapana Bhayo Mahango.
