Kathmandu, February 3
The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation has warned that there will be a shortage of drinking water in the Kathmandu Valley if it does not Rs 310 million for maintenance of water pipelines.
According to Bhim Prasad Upadhyaya, secretary at the ministry, they require this much of money to repair pipes that suffered damage during road expansion in the valley.
We can ensure smooth supply od drinking water only if the government releases this much of money without delay, Upadhyaya said at Friday’s meeting of the parliamentary Development Committee.
He said: Fifty-five per cent of underground pipes in the valley have suffered damage. Repairing them requires Rs 310 million, which we don’t have.
Upadhyaya said the Department of Roads, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Kathmandu Valley Development Authority have caused damage to pipes while expanding roads. He said: There will be a shortage of drinking water in Kathmandu if the government does not release Rs 310 million for repair and maintenance work.
